Today the Public Services (Social Value) Act 2012, also known as the Social Value Act, which I introduced over two and a half years ago, will be officially implemented across public sector bodies including NHS Trusts, local authorities and central government departments.
Today, the Public Services (Social Value) Act comes into force. The new legislation requires local authorities and other commissioners, including housing associations, to consider the social impact of their public service contracts before they start the procurement process.

Britain’s financial services sector is our single most successful industry. It is our biggest exporter – providing the foreign currency we need to pay for other imports; it contributes one in every eight pounds of the taxes that pay for our public services; and it employs (directly and in related businesses) over two million people: not only in the City of London – but all over the United Kingdom.
ResPublica today announce a new research project commencing January 2013. The wide-reaching programme of research will engage practically with partners in local government and other community intermediaries in order to map out the need for further reforms to achieve deeper, more radical forms of localism.
David Cameron’s speech has generated much the expected reaction. Domestically those on the Conservative right who hate Europe have welcomed the offer of an in/out referendum as giving them the chance to finally escape a continental union they despise, while those on the left decry Cameron for his reckless disregard of UK national interests and his betrayal of a vital pillar of social democracy.
